What to Consider in Building a Multi-Family Housing Gym for a Balanced End-User Experience

For most traditional club based or community based multi-family fitness centers, a well-balanced selection of cardio, strength and stretch equipment is essential.  The larger the space, the more opportunity to present a breadth of equipment.  That said, a smaller space can also be an effective amenity offering.

  • Treadmills: Treadmills allow you to walk, jog or run at different speeds and inclines. They are popular for cardio workouts, calorie burning and improving overall physical endurance.  Motorized treadmills are by far the most preferred models, but they do come in non-motorized styles as well.
  • Elliptical machines: Ellipticals are designed to simulate walking or running movements with low impact on the joints. There are two basic types: ones with stationary arm handles and ones with moving arm handles that can provide some upper body workout.  Like treadmills, they are popular for cardio workouts, calorie burning and improving overall physical endurance.
  • Stationary bikes:  Basically, there are three categories of stationary bikes: spin bike, upright bike, and seated recumbent bike.  Both the spin and upright bike types deliver an indoor cycling experience which the seated recumbent is more of a cycle machine. Each type has different resistance levels and programs that can vary the intensity of the workout.  Most manufacturers offer virtual riding experience either in real-time or pre-programmed content.  Keep in mind that nearly all of virtual experience packages require annual subscription fees.
  • Free weights: These include dumbbells, barbells, kettlebells and other weights that can be lifted or moved in different ways all designed to build muscle and improve flexibility.
  • Weight machines: Weight or strength machines have cables, pulleys, levers and weight plates that can target specific muscle groups. They have adjustable settings and instructions that can guide the user through the proper form and movement. Similar to free weights, this class of fitness equipment is designed for muscle building, overall strength and improving isolation.

Fitness Centers are an important amenity for buyers and represent a considerable investment for the home builder. A properly planned gym can deliver you a maximum return on your investment and your community members years of enjoyment.
